So far I've seen some good films. I was very interested and excited by a panel discussion I went to yesterday. The discussion was about the intersections between art and cinema, and how certain artist are using the medium to create new viewing spaces/conventions for film. I would eventually like to present a film or projection like this. A poem/film if possible.
I was disturbed by a film entitled "The Linguist" last night. I was excited because the film was supporting a very worthy cause (dying languages) in tribal communities around the world and I fully support the maintenance of language and the perpetuation thereof of perspective and culture, but it was difficult to see that once again, non-indigenous people, have to give "permission" for change to happen. A little editing would do this film a huge bit of service. It would also be interesting to see this kind of film made by Native linguists. But who would go to see it or pay for it? There was also a scene where they filmed a ceremony, that made me a reluctant viewer. I don't know if they should have gone there. . . but that's my opinion. Overall, I liked the documentary. I liked the humor and the energy of the people involved, but I wonder if it could have been . . . approached a little bit differently, for the sake of the all indigenous language speakers, at least.
